mod|u|lus
mod|u|lus «MOJ u luhs», noun, plural -li «-ly».
1. Physics. a quantity expressing the measure of some function, property, or the like, especially under conditions where the measure is unity.
2. Mathematics. a) a number by which two given numbers can be divided to leave the same remainders. Example: the modulus of 7 and 9 is 2, written as 7 = 9 (modulus 2). b) the factor by which a logarithm in one system is multiplied to change it to a logarithm in another system. c) = absolute value. (Cf.absolute value)
[< Latin modulus; see etym. under module (Cf.module)]
Usage modulus, coefficient. Modulus is used generally in describing physical relations; coefficient is more common for mathematical relations.
